Calling All Dentists?

Q: I was wondering what the best toothpaste brand is. I read that Colgate has an ingredient called triclosan, and that it is toxic, so I am guessing I should avoid colgate.

I was thinking about getting Crest ProHealth toothpaste. Is that good? Is there a better toothpaste? Should I just get Colgate?

A: I am a Dental Assistant with 2 dental certifications and 18 years experience in the dental field. I have not heard of this ingredient, triclosan, so I can’t comment on it, but I can give you some general information.

Crest and Colgate are 2 highly recognized and respected and regulated companies. I would doubt they would ever use an ingredient that would later be proved harmful, since their reputation is on the line, and one of their big goals is to be trusted and used by dentists, who are the people who will determine how successful they will be.

The FDA closely regulates all products used for health, so I wouldn’t worry about this particular ingredient, unless you have a moral or social problem with it. (For example, some people think Fluoride is poisonous, so they don’t want it in their water or toothpaste or anything .)

Crest ProHealth is a good product, and you can’t go wrong taking that route, and Colgate is good too, I would be comfortable with either.

Remember though, it’s not so much what toothpaste you use, as how good a BRUSHER & FLOSSER you are. If you are an excellent brusher and flosser, any toothpaste will work fine. If you stink at brushing and flossing, no toothpaste is really going to do you much good. Toothpaste does not work like soap, it’s ingredients only work on teeth that have been brushed well, otherwise you just have minty tasting dirt on germs on your teeth.

Hope this helps……….use any toothpaste with confidence, especially anything from Crest or Colgate.
